Accessibility

The standard we build to

WCAG 2.2, level AA. That is the version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the W3C in October 2023, and the level most public bodies and large companies require. It is also what the Americans with Disabilities Act is read against in practice, and what the European Accessibility Act points to.

We are not claiming perfection, and anyone who does is guessing. Automated tools catch perhaps a third of what matters; the rest takes a person. What we claim is that the site is built to the standard, that we test it on every release, and that we fix what we find.

What we test, and when

Every page, every time we ship a change:

• An automated audit of every page against WCAG 2.0, 2.1 and 2.2 at levels A and AA.
• Colour contrast measured rather than eyeballed, including text over photographs and over colour fields.
• Every page driven from the keyboard alone, checking that focus is always visible and never trapped, and that nothing sticky covers the thing you have just tabbed to.
• The page at 320 pixels wide and with text enlarged to 200%, with no sideways scrolling and nothing cut off.
• Every control measured against the 24-pixel minimum target size that WCAG 2.2 introduced.
• Motion switched off end to end when a device asks for less of it.

What that means on the page

• Every page works from the keyboard, with a visible focus ring and a skip link straight to the content.
• Photographs carry descriptions; ornament is hidden from screen readers rather than read out as noise.
• Sections arriving as you scroll, the rolling counters and the reels all stop when your device asks for reduced motion.
• Videos never start with sound, and never start at all on a metered connection.
• The menu is real text that can be searched, enlarged and read aloud — not a picture of a menu — and it answers to the names people actually use, so a search for golgappa finds the pani puri.
• Opening hours are stated in words as well as shown, and the same contact route appears in the same place on every page.

Where it falls short today

The map on the contact page is supplied by Google and we do not control its controls. The address, the phone number and a directions link sit next to it and do the same job without it.

Ordering happens on our ordering partners' own sites, which we do not build and cannot vouch for. You can always order by calling the shop instead, which is the route we would rather you had anyway.

We have not yet completed a full manual audit with assistive technology in the hands of the people who rely on it. That is scheduled, and this page will say so when it is done.

Who maintains this site

Paanwalla's website is designed, built and maintained by 99 MPH, who are responsible for its accessibility and for keeping it current. Accessibility is part of how the site is built and part of every release, rather than an audit somebody runs once a year.
